04h45 rabbits and something sitting

Posted in Sketchbook on September 30, 2011 by Gabriele

I ran out of steam with 15 minutes left on the hour. I did not realise how hard it is to draw bunnies. I like the fluidity I managed to get going with the lines, even if the shapes aren’t very good. You might have to click the image to get the full size version if you want to understand what I’m on about.

4h00: alles.gute

Drew this for a friend’s birthday. The whole thing including adding colour took over an hour for sure. But I stopped counting. So let’s put it down to just an hour.

For those of you that are interested in illustration process, I copied a few of the development stage images into a sequence (see above). I don’t have a set process I use to develop my sketches to finished illustrations. For this one I scanned the image. Inked it using a dark brown colour and a hard round brush on a new photoshop layer set at about 65 percent opacity. I then removed the bottom layer and added colour to my figures using watercolour brushes. Then I dropped in a texture background and added the ornament border and text. Played with the colour correction and layer opacities until I sort of liked it. None of that sounded very professional. Sorry.

Here’s something ugly I drew.

According to this blog I have only now done 3 hours of drawing, and I have just over 2 months to get to 100 hours. Luckily I have a backlog of sketches to upload which should take me up to about 8 hours. Here are some ugly fish.

Bauhaus Seals

Posted in Graphic Design on August 8, 2011 by Gabriele

I really love seals. I love all animals really. So I made this to advertise a protest against the killing of 85 000 seals in Namibia every year for their fur.I could talk about this for a long time and get emotional. I am not going to do that now.

I know it’s not really Bauhaus. But it’s more Bauhaus than anything I’ve done before. I like it. Trying to go for something less busy. Decided that gore is a bit overused and frankly unless done right can look really tacky.

What fresh hell is this? I am in the process of constructing some kind of portfolio which features my finished work without the rambling that they appear with on here. Until I can make something fully professional, maybe a PDF download or a pay portfolio site, I am using tumblr.com

I know. Don’t judge.

http://galaxyofgaby.tumblr.com/ here is the link for those of you tired of reading my words. I promise to keep this one (almost) word free. But stay here with me. I’m more fun here.

Dykeenies: tour

Posted in Graphic Design on July 29, 2011 by Gabriele

Here is a tour poster I made for The Dykeenies. I don’t know if they are going to use it or not. I didn’t have much to work with resource wise. A picture, a logo and a bunch of text. Original picture was black and white, and in a square. Used free lens filters and chopped the picture and switched it round so it was in a rectangle. I know the text is real busy. But it all had to fit in there somehow. I hate text.
